The Polygon sits within Banister & Polygon, one of the calmer, more settled parts of central Southampton, where falling crime rates, good schools and easy access to two hospitals make it an appealing spot for families. Flats here are more affordable than in nearby Portswood or Shirley, while terraces and semis command higher prices, and with a railway station and bus stops close by, residents get family-friendly living without sacrificing city centre convenience. The surrounding neighbourhoods round out the picture of what life near The Polygon looks like. Bargate, Southampton's city centre, is just a short distance away and brings shops, restaurants and strong transport links, including a railway station and two universities. Bevois and Freemantle offer more affordable alternatives, with Bevois standing out for its low living costs and Outstanding-rated primary schools, while Freemantle suits commuters thanks to its own railway station. Portswood adds a lively high street with cafés and independent shops, and Shirley brings green space, with 8 parks and excellent healthcare provision, including 4 hospitals. Across all these areas, a few themes stand out: strong transport links (often centred on a local railway station), falling crime rates, and solid healthcare and school provision. Property prices vary noticeably from one neighbourhood to the next, with Bevois offering the most affordable flats and terraces, and Shirley and Portswood commanding higher prices for houses, reflecting demand from families and professionals. For anyone considering The Polygon, this means a choice of character and budget on the doorstep, from affordable city living to greener, family-oriented streets, all within easy reach of central Southampton.
