Sholing Common

Sholing Common sits within one of Southampton's more affordable and well-connected waterfront pockets, drawing on the strengths of Sholing, Thornhill and Woolston around it. House prices here are genuinely accessible compared with much of the surrounding area: flats in Sholing average £144,000, Thornhill's flats come in even lower at £122,000, and semis and detached homes still offer good value for buyers wanting extra space without the premium prices seen in Hamble, Netley or Bursledon. This makes it a sensible choice for first-time buyers and families alike. Transport and daily amenities are solid rather than flashy. Sholing has its own railway station for easy runs into Southampton, backed up by decent bus links, while Thornhill leans more on road access and is better suited to those with a car. Across the area, you'll find everyday shopping, dining, parks and green space close to hand, though for bigger supermarkets, gyms or GP appointments, residents often head just outside the immediate neighbourhood into Woolston or Peartree, where healthcare provision is stronger, including a hospital and multiple GP practices. Schools are a real plus, with the Outstanding-rated Springwell School serving both Sholing and Thornhill, and generally well-regarded primaries in Woolston too. Crime has been falling steadily year on year across all three neighbourhoods and sits below national averages, while mild coastal weather and good air quality round out the appeal. The overall picture is one of a settled, improving residential area that offers strong value for money, practical transport options and good local schooling, with slightly better healthcare and bigger shopping on the doorstep in neighbouring Woolston.
