Shantallow

Shantallow sits on Derry's northern edge and is made up of several neighbourhoods, including Carn Hill, Galliagh, Madam's Bank and Shantallow East. Across the board, it's a quiet, residential area with crime rates well below the UK average and falling year on year, giving it a genuine reputation for safety. Living costs are consistently lower than the national average too, with savings showing up in council tax, utilities and everyday groceries. Monthly outgoings in Galliagh, for example, run at around £463 compared to £640 nationally, and rents across the suburb stay well within reach, making it an appealing option for buyers watching their budget. Families are especially well catered for here. Schools are a real strength, with Steelstown Primary, St Columb's College, St Brigid's College, Ardnashee School and College, and the Irish-medium Bunscoil Cholmcille all within or close to the suburb. Air quality is good throughout, and the pace of life is settled rather than busy. The trade-off is day-to-day convenience. Most neighbourhoods here have few shops, GPs or public transport links within their own boundaries, so residents typically rely on nearby areas just outside Shantallow for dining, pharmacies and other services. Madam's Bank is the exception, offering a convenience store, supermarket, pub and banks within walking distance, along with a local bus station. Road access is strong across the suburb, with the A2 providing a straightforward route into Derry city centre, so a car makes daily life considerably easier given the limited bus coverage elsewhere. Overall, Shantallow suits buyers who value safety, good schools and affordability over having everything on the doorstep.
