Sciennes sits within the Southside/Newington neighbourhood, one of Edinburgh's best-served residential pockets for families and professionals alike. The area is dense with restaurants, cafés and shops, and healthcare provision is excellent, with eight GP practices and two hospitals close by. Schools are a real draw too: Sciennes Primary itself has a strong local reputation, with Preston Street Primary, James Gillespie's High School and Edinburgh University's campuses all within easy reach. Getting around is straightforward, thanks to good bus connections, cycle routes and primary roads running through the neighbourhood, and living costs stay below the UK average on transport and utilities. Sciennes benefits from its position close to several other well-regarded Edinburgh neighbourhoods, each adding its own strengths to the wider area. Morningside, just nearby, brings further family appeal with George Watson's College, strong state primaries and four hospitals within reach, while the City Centre is a short journey away for culture, nightlife and transport links, including rail and tram access to the airport. Further out, neighbourhoods like Liberton/Gilmerton and Craigentinny/Duddingston offer additional green space, lower living costs and solid healthcare and school provision, giving residents plenty of options beyond their immediate doorstep. Across all these areas, a few themes stand out: strong healthcare access, good school provision and below-average living costs compared with the rest of the UK. Transport varies by location, with Sciennes and Southside/Newington leaning on buses and cycle routes rather than rail, while areas like the City Centre and Portobello/Craigmillar offer direct rail links. Overall, Sciennes offers the best of both worlds: a well-connected, amenity-rich city neighbourhood with easy access to Edinburgh's wider mix of green space, schools and healthcare, making it a practical and popular choice for families, professionals and students alike.
