Rushington
Rushington sits within a well-connected corner of the New Forest area, where good schools, falling crime and clean air come up again and again. Families are particularly well catered for, with Good and Outstanding-rated primaries scattered throughout, including Hazel Wood Infant, Testwood School and Abbotswood Junior School, giving parents plenty of solid options nearby. Crime rates across the surrounding neighbourhoods have dropped below both regional and national averages, and the semi-rural setting keeps air quality consistently strong.
Housing and lifestyle vary quite a bit depending on which part you're looking at. Totton Central and Totton North offer some of the best value in the area, with detached homes around £406,900 and flats as low as £167,400, alongside everyday conveniences like Morrisons, GP surgeries and pharmacies close at hand. Head towards Brockenhurst or the more rural New Forest wards, and prices climb sharply, especially for detached homes, in exchange for more space, countryside surroundings and, in Brockenhurst's case, a direct rail link to Southampton and London Waterloo. Marchwood & Eling and Totton South sit somewhere in between, offering quieter residential living with good local schools but fewer amenities right on the doorstep.
Transport is a common thread throughout: the M27 and M271 put Southampton within easy reach by car, and several wards have their own railway stations for commuters who'd rather not drive. Public transport options are generally limited, though, so this is very much a car-dependent area. A good number of residents work from home, in some wards nearing 4 in 10, which fits with the overall feel of Rushington as a place that balances countryside calm with practical access to the city for those who need it.
