Mapperley

Mapperley and the neighbourhoods around it add up to a well-rounded, family-friendly part of Nottingham, with good schools, low and falling crime, and excellent air quality running right through the area. Housing spans a wide range, from accessible flats and terraces in Ernehale (£111,800 and £193,000 respectively) to pricier detached homes in Woodthorpe and Sherwood, with Daybrook offering some of the best value for detached houses at £267,800. Wherever you look, living costs tend to sit below the UK average, helped by cheaper transport, utilities and council tax, making this a genuinely affordable corner of the city despite its strong amenities and school options. Schools are a real strength across the board, with Good or Outstanding ratings common, including Redhill Academy and Ernehale's infant and junior schools. Everyday life is well catered for too, with plenty of cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and healthcare provision, particularly in Mapperley, Sherwood and Ernehale, though spots like Plains and Porchester mean heading just outside their boundaries for a supermarket or GP. Road links into Nottingham are consistently good via the A60 and A612, and a fair chunk of residents work from home, but public transport is patchy in places, with Porchester especially limited to a single bus stop and no trains. The main differences come down to pace and price. Woodthorpe and Sherwood feel the most established and well-connected, with hospitals, gyms and a wider retail offer. Daybrook and Ernehale are the more budget-conscious choices, while Mapperley itself strikes a balance with mid-to-upper house prices, frequent buses and a strong local café culture. Plains and Porchester lean quieter and more residential, suiting those happy to drive for bigger shops and nightlife in exchange for a settled, low-crime setting.
