Lozells
Lozells is one of Birmingham's more affordable inner-city areas, with terraced houses and flats priced below the regional average. Good GP, pharmacy and dentist coverage sits alongside a solid choice of primary schools, including Good-rated options and an Outstanding academy nearby. Bus links into central Birmingham are strong, and air quality here is excellent, a theme that carries through much of the surrounding area. Crime has been falling year on year, adding to the sense of a neighbourhood on the up.
The wards around Lozells reinforce this picture of practical, good-value city living. Aston and Newtown both offer some of the cheapest terraces and flats in the area, paired with railway stations, tram stops and cycleways that make getting into the city centre straightforward. Soho and Jewellery Quarter pushes slightly more upmarket with flats averaging £231,650, but still delivers excellent transport links and healthcare provision, including nine hospitals within reach. Handsworth and Birchfield lean towards family buyers, with larger semi-detached homes, well-regarded schools, including King Edward VI grammar schools, and a settled, established community feel.
Across the whole area, living costs stay comfortably below the UK average, driven by lower council tax and cheaper transport. Schooling is a consistent strength, with Outstanding-rated academies and grammar schools scattered throughout, and healthcare access is rarely more than a short trip away. Crime has fallen across nearly every neighbourhood since 2024, and air quality is good throughout, making this a part of Birmingham where affordability doesn't come at the expense of everyday amenities or connectivity.
