Longbridge

Longbridge sits on Birmingham's southern edge and offers some of the city's best value housing, particularly around Rubery and Rednal, where terraces average £209,000 and flats start from just £100,000. Prices rise as you move towards the greener fringes of Barnt Green, Hopwood and Cofton, where detached and semi-detached homes command a premium thanks to the semi-rural setting. Wherever you look, though, this is an area where your money stretches further than in much of Birmingham, with King's Norton North and Longbridge & West Heath both standing out as practical entry points for first-time buyers. Families are well catered for across the suburb. Good and Outstanding-rated primary schools turn up in every neighbourhood, from St James Catholic Primary in Rubery to St Andrew's CofE First School in Barnt Green, and secondary options are close by too. Healthcare provision is a genuine strength, with GP practices, dentists, pharmacies and hospitals well spread across the area, including a hospital right within Cofton. Crime has been falling steadily into 2026 across every neighbourhood, and air quality is consistently excellent, helped by the proximity to the Lickey Hills and the area's semi-rural character. Transport and living costs tell a similarly positive story. Railway stations in Longbridge, Cofton and Barnt Green give commuters straightforward access into Birmingham city centre, while the A38 and M42 handle the drivers, particularly in car-reliant pockets like Rubery and Rednal. Living costs, council tax and transport expenses all sit below the national average throughout the suburb. The main variation is one of character rather than quality: Barnt Green and Hopwood lean quiet and semi-rural with high levels of home working, Northfield and King's Norton North offer a fuller mix of everyday amenities, and Rubery brings supermarkets, pubs and pharmacies within easy reach. Across the board, Longbridge delivers affordability, decent schools and easy access to Birmingham, making it a strong option for families and first-time buyers alike.
