Gaer is a residential neighbourhood on Newport's western edge, known for its affordable housing and strong everyday convenience. Semi-detached homes sit around £235,000 and terraces at £180,000, making it one of the more budget-friendly options in the area, ideal for first-time buyers and families. Supermarkets, a GP, pharmacies and a good choice of primary schools are all on the doorstep, so daily life needs little travelling. Crime has fallen sharply since 2024 and now sits below the UK average, adding to its appeal as a settled, family-friendly spot. The surrounding neighbourhoods echo these themes while offering their own flavour. Allt-yr-yn and Graig command higher house prices for larger semis and detached homes, reflecting steady demand and a quieter, community feel, while Pillgwenlly and Rogerstone East offer some of the cheapest terraces and semis around, paired with strong school provision and good transport links. Stow Hill stands out for its education cluster and healthcare provision, including two hospitals, and Tredegar Park and Marshfield leads on detached house prices at roughly £435,000, alongside easy M4 access. Across the area, living costs consistently run below the UK average, particularly for transport and council tax, and crime rates are falling in nearly every neighbourhood. Transport suits drivers well, with the A48 and M4 both close by for commuting to Cardiff and Bristol, while rail links from Pillgwenlly, Rogerstone East and Stow Hill add further options. Taken together, Gaer and its surrounding neighbourhoods offer a genuinely affordable slice of Newport, with solid schools, falling crime and good connections, making it a practical choice for families and buyers alike.
