City Centre
Oxford's City Centre is built around university life, with historic colleges such as Magdalen, New College, Queen's and two dozen others woven into the fabric of daily life. The neighbourhoods here, including Carfax & Jericho, Holywell, Osney & St Thomas and Walton Manor, share a strong conservation character with period homes, cobbled streets and architecture that draws people from across the world. This is a walkable, cyclable part of the city: footways and cycle routes are excellent throughout, Oxford train station sits within easy reach, and most residents get around on foot, by bike or simply work from home rather than drive.
Each pocket of the centre has its own flavour. Carfax & Jericho and Walton Manor are known for their period terraces and sought-after addresses, with Walton Manor in particular standing out for low crime and easy access to parks and cafés. Holywell sits deepest in the university quarter, commanding some of Oxford's highest property prices thanks to its historic, central setting, though crime there runs a touch above the city average. Osney & St Thomas offers a more practical, family-friendly feel, close to the station with good schools and riverside green space balancing out the central location.
Across the board, air quality is excellent and crime is generally falling, making this a safer and increasingly liveable part of the city despite its density. Amenities such as shops, cafés, pubs and healthcare are either on the doorstep or a short walk away, and terraced housing here averages well over £800,000, reflecting the premium attached to living at the heart of one of the world's great university cities. It's a neighbourhood suited to those who value history, walkability and culture over space and a garden.
