Broadwood
Broadwood sits within Cumbernauld and draws on a wide stretch of surrounding neighbourhoods, from Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch through to Denny, Banknock and Gartcosh. Across the board, it's a family-oriented part of the central belt, with schools doing a lot of the heavy lifting: nurseries, primaries and secondaries sit within easy reach almost everywhere, and East Dunbartonshire's schools in particular rank among the best in Scotland. Healthcare follows the same pattern, with GP practices, pharmacies and even a hospital in Kilsyth covering everyday needs without a long trip.
Affordability is the other thread running through the area. Living costs and rents consistently come in below the UK average, with North Lanarkshire especially cheap compared to neighbouring East Dunbartonshire and Stirling. Cumbernauld North, for example, sees typical monthly outgoings of around £553 and three-bed rents near £859, while Cumbernauld East comes in even lower at roughly £543 a month. That said, rents do creep up in areas closer to the better-performing school catchments, so there's some variation depending on exactly where you land.
Transport leans heavily on the road network, with the M80, M73 and A803 providing quick links to Glasgow, Stirling and Falkirk. Rail access is patchy: Cumbernauld North and South, plus Gartcosh, Glenboig and Moodiesburn, have stations feeding straight into Glasgow, but Kilsyth and the East Dunbartonshire neighbourhoods rely on buses and a car for onward travel. Air quality is good throughout, and most neighbourhoods offer a decent spread of parks, restaurants and everyday shops, making this a settled, practical choice for anyone wanting space and value without losing touch with the city.
