Barrow Island
Barrow Island sits within one of the most affordable corners of Cumbria, surrounded by neighbourhoods where property prices consistently undercut the national average. Terraces across the area typically range from £89,000 in Old Barrow and Hindpool to £136,700 in Ormsgill and Parkside, with semis and detached homes in Risedale, Roosecote and Ormsgill offering more space from £224,800 upwards. Living costs throughout the area sit comfortably below the UK average, making this a genuinely practical option for buyers and renters alike.
Schools are a real strength here. Victoria Academy in Ormsgill and Parkside holds an Outstanding rating, Yarlside Academy sees 97% of pupils meeting expected standards, and every primary school on nearby Walney Island is rated Good or Outstanding too. Crime has fallen sharply across the surrounding neighbourhoods over the past two years and now sits well below national levels, pointing to a settled, increasingly safe community. Healthcare provision is solid, with 8 GP practices and 9 dentists concentrated in Old Barrow and Hindpool alone.
Connectivity varies depending on which side of Barrow Island you're closest to. Old Barrow and Hindpool benefit from a railway station and dense local amenities within walking distance, while Risedale and Roosecote has its own stop on the Cumbrian Coast Line plus good bus and road links. Ormsgill and Parkside offers easy access to the A590 and a strong jobs base in manufacturing, healthcare and retail. Walney Island, by contrast, has excellent air quality and a good range of restaurants and supermarkets, but public transport is limited, so a car is close to essential there. Across the board, manufacturing and healthcare remain the dominant employers, with growing numbers also working from home.
