Altnagelvin

Altnagelvin sits on the edge of Derry, bringing together a handful of quiet, settled neighbourhoods that share a strong family appeal. Crime rates run consistently below both the Northern Ireland and UK averages across the area, and several neighbourhoods, including Victoria and Kilfennan, report figures falling further each year. Schools are a real strength here: Sacred Heart in Clondermot, Chapel Road Primary in Victoria, two primaries in Drumahoe, and easy access to Lumen Christi College all give families plenty of choice. Living costs stay comfortably under the national average throughout, with cheaper council tax, utilities and transport making this a genuinely affordable base close to the city. Getting around means relying on a car. The A6 and A2 give straightforward road access into Derry city centre, but public transport is thin on the ground in most of these neighbourhoods, bar Victoria, which benefits from nearby bus and rail links. Once you're mobile, though, everything the city offers, shops, schools, healthcare, is within easy reach. Day-to-day amenities follow a similar pattern across the suburb: local essentials like convenience stores, pharmacies and a pub or coffee shop tend to sit within or right on the edge of each neighbourhood, while bigger supermarkets, banks and restaurants are a short trip away rather than on the doorstep. Rents stay affordable throughout, ranging from around £602 for a one-bed to £1,172 for larger family homes, with gradual, modest growth rather than sharp rises. The main differences come down to character and pace: Slievekirk and Drumahoe lean more rural and spacious, Clondermot and Kilfennan offer a practical, settled residential feel, and Victoria has slightly better transport connections alongside its strong school options. Whichever neighbourhood you choose, Altnagelvin delivers a calm, affordable alternative to city centre living, with Derry's amenities and schools always close at hand.
